Five real heavy metallic reasons to visit the Gloria Club in Helsinki, yet the location as such - a former theater - has a special atmosphere, and it has indeed still those box seats with perfect view on stage... A concert with many bands usually begins over-punctually, therefore the openers
Sans Human
had already played most of their half-hour set when I finally reached the Club. Two songs are not quite enough to write a review, but their classic Metal/Thrash Metal with clean and growl vocals was quite appealing. In the end of the show they gave everything, there was a lot of action on stage, but unfortunately only a dozen visitors were present at that time to appreciate that.
Ultramayhem
stuck out with their outfits, the singer wore red face paint and a sort of apron with the band logo. And as the previous band, they all were quite active which made photographing quite a challenge. The vocalist handled the switch between clean and heavy style quite well, yet the musical crossover - something like "Silent Waters" Amorphis, Faith No More, Industrial-Goth - seemed too much like "work in progress". Too much of style mix to become a style... but letīs wait and see what those guys come up with next.
Naildown
had already much more audience, and their mixture of Melodic Death and Thrash Metal works out nicely. A modern Finnish version of 80s Bay Area sound: powerful riffs, heavy but rather clean vocals, a catchy chorus and the tempo just right for banging. Great band! Who has a crush on something like Slipknot can just go and get the latest Naildown CD "Dreamcrusher".
Before The Dawn
If you interpret shoving and pushing in front of a stage in terms of popularity, this band must be VERY popular now... you could see the guys from Lahti/Heinola/Jyväskylä clearly only towards the end of their set, when they played their radio hit "Deadsong" (from their recent Deadlight album) - the audience turned into one single huge bubbling mass of banging heads and flowing hair... Bass player Lars had re-covered his funny bone ("we do it quick and painful"), also guitarist Juha could be seen grinning, only band boss Tuomas seemed to be in another dimension and just focused on playing. A lot of cheers after their flawless 60 min show, and even more cheers when they came back on stage - but only to put their instruments away. Indeed, "quick and painful" - we all would have enjoyed to hear more!
Insomnium
When photographing seemed difficult during Before The Dawn - here it seemed like Mission Impossible. Although the band started their set long after midnight, they kept their audience in the venue and under their spell. And it seemed that the fans had just warmed up... Niilo and both Villes (Friman and Vänni) banged as if they got extra money for that and offered a set mix of classics and recent "Above The Weeping World" highlights, e. g. "Killjoy". The fans were excited, and the band seemed to have learned a lot during their US adventure with Swallow The Sun, in terms of stage presence and professional attitude. For my taste it was almost a bit too much of professionalism - but you can find out for yourself, because Insomnium might be soon playing in your town with Amorphis and Swallow The Sun!

Gleich fünf schwermetallische Gründe, den Gloria Klub in Helsinki aufzusuchen; jedoch bietet schon die Örtlichkeit an sich - ein ehemaliges Theater - ein besonderes Ambiente, wo der "Logenplatz" beim Konzert durchaus wörtlich zu verstehen ist... So viele Bands an einem Abend bedeutete auch überpünktlichen Beginn, weshalb ich vom Opener
Sans Human
gerade noch die letzten beiden Songs des halbstündigen Programms mitkriegte - zu wenig, um ein fundiertes Urteil abzugeben. Eher im klassischen Metal/Thrash Metal angesiedelt, mit sowohl Clean- als auch Growl-Vocals, gaben die Jungs am Schluss noch alles, was sie hatten, und boten jede Menge Action. Leider befanden sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt vielleicht erst ein Dutzend Fans vor der Bühne.

spielten bereits vor einer ansehnlichen Fankulisse und überzeugten auf voller Linie mit ihrer Mischung aus Melodic Death und Thrash Metal. Eine moderne, finnische Version des 80er Bay Area Sounds: fette treibende Riffs, heavy aber clean Vocals, Ohrwurmchöre und das Tempo gerade so schön zum Mitbangen gehalten - ein klasse Act. Wer auf Sachen a la Slipknot steht, kann sich jedenfalls schon mal getrost die neueste Naildown CD "Dreamcrusher" zulegen.

Wenn Gedrängel vor der Bühne als Beliebtheitsfaktor zählt, dann sind die Jungs aus Lahti/Heinola/Jyväskylä ja in der Tat verdammt angesagt... Richtig schön freien Blick hatte man erst gegen Ende des Sets, als sie ihren Radiohit "Deadsong" (vom aktuellen Deadlight-Album) vom Stapel ließen: ein Meer an Köpfen und fliegenden Haaren, wirklich ALLE bangten, was die Nackenmuskeln hergaben. Basser Lars hatte wieder seine Scherzkekse eingepackt ("we do it quick and painful"), auch Gitarrist Juho grinste zwischendurch von einem Ohr zum anderen; nur Band-Boss Tuomas schien wieder mal in anderen Dimensionen zu weilen, rein aufs Spielen konzentriert. Der Jubel nach dem knapp einstündigen makellosen Set war groß, und dann noch größer, als die Band erneut auf die Bühne kam - allerdings nur, um die Instrumente wegzuräumen. Tja, wirklich "schnell und schmerzhaft" - wir hätten liebend gerne mehr gehört!
Insomnium
Wenn fotografieren bei Before The Dawn schon schwierig war - hier wurde es abenteuerlich. Obwohl ihr Set erst weit nach Mitternacht anfing, hielten Insomnium den Grossteil des Publikums im Venue und in ihrem Bann. Die Fans schienen auch gerade erst richtig warm geworden zu sein.... Niilo und die beiden Ville (Friman und Vänni) bangten, als kriegten sie es extra bezahlt, und schmetterten Klassiker und Highlights vom neuen Album "Above The Weeping World", wie etwa "Killjoy" in die begeisterte Menge. Die Band hatte durch die Tour in den USA mit Swallow The Sun offensichtlich einiges an Bühnenpräsenz dazugewonnen - mir war es fast etwas zu professionell und routiniert... aber das könnt ihr ja bald selbst beurteilen, wenn Insomnium mit Amorphis und Swallow The Sun in eurer Stadt Station machen!
